The Question of MORE Land

Hey there Clammers. Figured I would hop on in here with something we are seeing asked for all the time. Land. More Land. More Room. More More More More More…

Brian

I have always said if you want to enact change, take steps to do it. Don’t just say you hate something, say why…how it can be better…how to make it NOT hated. This is the same in any walk of life. There are things that can be changed and things that can’t be. It all comes down to the ins and outs and technicality of it all too. Especially when it comes to games. If you add here, do you have to take from there?

Well TinyCo, also paying attention to players requests wanted to start dialog on the subject of MORE Land a lil further. Get some feedback, input, and thoughts on it as well as sharing some inside from the other side of things. You know, that “Bigger Picture” thing I keep talking about. 🙂

Here are some things that Matt @ TinyCo would like YOU, our readers, to communicate to him.

“How much space is enough space?”

We’ve talked before about how space gets released – in particular that it’s best coupled with districts and as a between-events release, to keep the game novel. We also need to test new districts extensively to make sure having more stuff on the screen doesn’t cause more crashes.
We’re hearing more and more discussion about this, and it bears further research. For players who need more space, what are you trying to display? Is this for quest and theme buildings? Or are you trying to display everything ever purchased? Is the problem that new event content pushes our staple buildings (such as offices), or is there another desire we aren’t aware of?
To that end, from a collector’s perspective, what is the ideal rate for space to keep up with content? TQFS releases a lot of content, in large part because that is the single thing players most want and ask for. Whenever content starts drying up, we get a huge influx of tickets, comments and tweets about it. And, of course, fewer players play the game as returning traffic drops.
Because of this, we don’t expect space to keep up 1:1 with new content – doing so would lead to crashes and other tragedies. There are many different ways for players to play, and we’d like to be cognizant of collectors’ requests for space while also keeping an interesting release schedule and a stable game.
So there you have it. Directly from the mouth of TinyCo. Now, we would like to open up the dialog to YOU. Please be respectful to everyone’s thoughts and ideas. Be constructive. Be helpful. Please also keep this post comment thread to JUST Land. We know you have lots on your mind, but we would like to keep focus on Land ONLY here. So give Matt YOUR answers. YOUR feedback. A community grows best when it grows together. We LOVE hearing from you and so does TinyCo.

  1. I need enough land to keep up with everything Ive purchased. Why buy it just to store in a menu somewhere. As for crashing, mine does anyway and has glitches that never get fixed. I need the land. More more land.

  2. I don’t get it? You keep releasing new buildings and stuff for us to build (for example the Cleveland Show items now available) but no more land to make room for these? Come on, we spend a lot of time and sometimes REAL money on this game! Land shouldn’t even be an issue, it’s not with the Simpsons game!

    • This, this, a hundred times this. Family Guy is as big of a show as The Simpsons; both owned by Fox, which their game division is in charge of. A lot of people have been playing since close to the beginning, but they turn out more bunk than nessessary. Put limits on generic items like office buildings. When you release a new district, open more than four squares of land. I don’t think the programmers actually play the game, cause if they did, this wouldn’t be an issue. And i know server space is an issue, too, but this isn’t GTA Online or Fallout 4. This should have been remedied in the spring of ’15. At this point, it’s kind of an eff you to the dedicated players. I’ve been playing since a month after launch and loads of junk from six plus events are just sitting in storage. I’ve been playing tsto since July 2013 and never had an issue with land. I try to have one of everything, but with Family Guy, it’s just.. disappointing. I think after the Cleveland Show event (if i can get Donna and Roberta) i’ll be taking a long break. Sad to say.

      • Just make sure you keep in mind that it is the SHOWS that are owned by FOX, not the games. TSTO is owned and operated by EA as massively huge worldwide conglomerate of thousands upon thousands of employees. FG is owned and operated by TinyCo, based out of one place in California with only a small handful of employees. So one has a lot more resources and access to pull from than the other. There will be a difference no matter what we say due to this. It is like putting up a one store Mom & Pop coffee shop against the giant that is Starbucks. There is no way the Mom & Pop can compete on that level. Same goes here.

Just wanted you to see the Bigger Picture and understand there is so much more you are not factoring into the equation when putting the two games side by side. I will tell you from running a site for BOTH games, even EA struggles with space, content, and many many glitches to this day. Just recently with their new update even. So neither is without their faults. 😉

  3. I know I am way behind on this thread, but I have too much stuff and not enough land to display it all and sadly because the stuff is in my inventory I have no idea what is needed for characters and/or tasks. Once you hit the max level and have all land and most items if not all then you are stuck with a lot of cash and inventory and nothing to use it or and no where to put it. This thread was started over a year ago and still no new land. Guess it’s time to leave family guy and focus on new content from Simpsons tapped out

  4. There is a simple solution guys mentioned many times.
A big contributer to lack of space is the wide roads. Delete the footpaths, and allow concrete squares. It will minimize a lot of wasted space.
Yes, once you make this change it will make people re-adjust their town layouts, and will temporary piss some people off, however, short term pain for long term gain.

Unfortunately for me on of the requirements to complete the quest is to clear a block and all of my blocks have been clears aside from the blocks that are locked. In order to unlock those blocks I have to complete this quest. Can someone please let me know if there is anyway to solve this problem. I do not want to start all over. Thanks!

When I ran out of land I started squeezing my buildings together, removing roads and decorations. My town is over crowded an unsightly now and my enthusiasm for this game is fading.

  7. my inventory is nearly full and with new content coming in we need more land… the simpsons tapped out has land expansions using currency collected in the game and with the last two events revolving around different collectable currencies this would be a great time to intoduce this feature and spend some of our excess cash

  8. So, all i am getting they are too lazy to do it. Either take a month and add more land. Or make road smaller. Its not that hard. If TSTO can do it, FG can too. They can make random event with lots of stuff but cant make more land. Also they need to add different roads. Like Dirt Road or something.

    • Just an FYI… it took TSTO 3 years to get the land they have. Most of the new land… was just released in the last few months… and it was almost a year before they brought that new land. 😉

        • This isn’t TSTO… so I’d suggest to not compare them too much. Two completely different game houses. One small like a mom n pop shop. The other a monstrous conglomerate based worldwide.

The two will never function alike. Ever. TinyCo does what they’re capable of. EA does what they are

            • Don’t make assumptions on what a company can or can’t do. Again you’re comparing a huge WORLDWIDE Corporation with remote locations and thousands of employees at their beck and call anytime to a “mom n pop shop” Run out of ONE local place. Everything done in house by a handful of employees. It’s not the same.

Besides this is the ADDICTS site. You want info on how a company is ran… ask the company. 😉

Perhaps there can be a cabinet screen, wherein certain awards can be displayed, such as trophies and some seasonal items.

I am personally at a loss for what to do with items that look like rooms and movie sets. It feels odd to have a town full of buildings with random open rooms spread about.

I know Tiny Co say it’s because we may delete something precious by accident but not if they make a safer delete process with a proper warning.

  10. I like to display everything that earns money, as well as a few things I really like that do not earn money. Most of my buildings are in orderly rows, but I also enjoy creating more true-to-life areas where the buildings and decorations may be a bit more spread out.

Part of the fun, for me, is arranging everything. It would be nice if extra land was available to purchase, outside of new districts.

  14. Perhaps you devs should play the Simpson’s tapped out. There’s plenty of land for everything, you can place numerous items on the water, roads don’t create extra dead space, & there’s no issue with gameplay. It’s pretty simple. I get releasing new districts, but perhaps you should just release new buildings, characters, quests, etc & let people buy as much land when they want. The map size difference between these two games is HUGE & really should be addressed.

  15. So basically what they’re saying is that they can’t open new land during events because it’s too much and they can’t open new land between events because they’re too busy trying to meet the demands of creating new content. Meanwhile, we’re sitting here cramming buildings together, filling up storage with anything that doesn’t generate income, and deleting roads trying to make room for it all. It’s just a big green square, how much of a problem could it be? How about more land and fewer gold statues? No town needs 20 different gold statues.

Here’s a suggestion. Stop releasing these ugly, pointless items that look ridiculous yet generate coins, like that giant golden cat statue or a dog park or Anal Point. Release those as decorations and let people make their town look nice if they want it to without having to worry about losing out on coins. I hate that stupid pyramid but it makes money so I leave it out.

  16. I understand that the company doesn’t want more bugs in the game which makes sense since there are indeed bugs and we all know it but when you make event like comicon or halloween there are so many new items and buildings to buy and expose and unfortunately each of these events doesn’t come with a new patch of land to expose your purchases. There needs to be a middle ground between new space and new items to purchase. Because you end up with a lack of space very quickly, some peoples will decorate their town in seasons others do want to show it all and I think both choice should be something that is possible for players. If the Simpsons game can do it which is very close in nature to the family guy game why not make it a possibility. Just my 2 cents here.

  17. I think the best way to go abt this would be to add on a second separate screen you can click to, like when visiting someone, Etc. that is your second little city area of land reserved for more stuff. As long as the two can be navigated easily smoothly& it is done without crashing or freezes or game glitch somehow. Maybe you could charge a SMALL fee to obtain a second land area, if it costs Tinyco to create it smoothly? Id buy it, freemium players may hate that idea- however making games takes money by creators. Maybe offer a full size for cash& smaller one for coins? I am just saying my opinions. If I were making a game where half the players ran out of space this would be my solution IF possible without glitching, a second screen switch. And neighbors could visit whatever screen you left your game in when you left it and still obtain coins. Does this sound possible? I for one have plenty of space, I am making suggestions for all players who say they do not is all. And Id still buy the space of course.

  18. was bugged by how far the road has to sit from most of the actual buildings, very few hit both sides equally, leaving a lot of space behind or in front. Would it be possible to program that spacing smaller to be able to be closer to the building, therefore creating more space? I have no idea how hard this might be, it’s just something I thought of.

      Like

      • Hello, I can remove roads and all that. I’m more talking about the “spacing” used for them. For example for something like the size of the burger place, I can line up the building on one side to the road, try to line one up on the other side only to find it “red” and not being able to be placed there. I have to move the road a few spaces over, hence leaving a huge space, which seems like a waste. I hope this makes more sense. ☺️

  19. So a lot of people have suggested doing different screens, a la TSTO and the Krustyland.
I have to say, that personally I think that is a horrible idea.
I mean it’s cool to have a Krustyland, but it also adds another loading screen, and waiting for something to load is not fun! It just feels like a waste of time.
Also, how many players in TSTO really care about their Krustyland? When you have a finished Krustyland you sort of forget about that part of the game which is a shame. You just end up with a dead area and an area that you actually care about.

Personally, I wouldn’t like that solution.
So far the idea of doing districts that also open small lots of land as well seems like a good solution.
In my opinion this doesn’t need to change.

    • I go to Krustyland at least once a week and love that I can display the Valentine’s and Easter items there instead of having them just sit in my inventory.

  20. Ive noticed a lot of the space issue is due to the mass roads take up. How about thinner roads or cobblestone paths

    Like

  21. I’ve noticed that they’ve recently addressed some of the issues – you can now skin buildings and you can now sell old items. However one fundamental issue remains and that is the inconsistent size of the buildings in a world of consistently sized ‘blocks’. It’s great that the buildings are so varied in size and shape but this will inevitably lead to wasted space which is not great when land is at a premium. It becomes almost a game in itself as you try to make buildings fit like Tetris.

The problem is you can only place roads in a fixed grid pattern which gives a fixed size of blocks in your town, however invariably the building you want to place has been designed to be 1 square wider than the squares available in that block. So you need to move the road, however you can’t just move the road over 1 square, you need to move it over an entire road width, which leads to more wasted space.

If it was possible to place roads at 1 square intervals so blocks didn’t have to be completely uniform (it can’t be that hard to make them unable to place overlapping another road, same as overlapping another building) then this will solve 99% of the spacing issues. You would be able to have fat blocks for the bigger buildings and thin blocks for the smaller buildings without having wasted space behind buildings. There’s no real benefit from a players point of view to have the roads locked at fixed intervals, why not just place them anywhere on the grid like you can with buildings and decorations? It can’t be that hard to tweak the code?

  24. I’d like to see the event space moved to the center of the town, even if it meant having to redesign the town. I think that way it frees up the fringes of the town where it’s normally placed now. Also the space allocation around buildings should be lessened so decorations can be placed closer.
I wish cars could be placed on the road or in driveways, beach front should be expanded, the water space should be decreased as there isn’t much to do with it and the only things in it/can go in it are the unfinished blimp quest and boats, that right there is some premium space that could be used for more land!.

Another option: to have some district that is event-related. You have one place that will show the “district event”. During some event (i.e hallowen) that special district will show the “district event” (i.e. hallowen district), and when the event finishes, you can choose with district event you want to show there from the list of events you have done (i.e. comic con, hallowen, endless summer, christmas, …). The rest of the city remains unaltered, as you designed it in your our city.

You can place items from events in the district you want, not only at the “district event”. And redesign the city so many as you want, but there is a rotating district, a modular district, a module that you can add or remove (and only one “district event” is shown at a time in the city).

  27. I like the building skin’s solution. The same land but different skins for each event.

On solution beyond: More worlds, and one land in each world. Or multiverse (multiple dimensions or universes). Only one world/dimension/universe loaded on RAM at a time, and you can switch between worlds.

Modular neighborhoods (i mean our own neighborhoods, not actual friends’ cities). You build some neighborhoods, in a independent way. And then you choose which ones you want to show at this time in your city (within the memory limit i.e. 12 neightborhoods shown, from the 30 you have built up in total).

  28. a lot of space is wasted behind buildings and decos due to how we have to place the buildings in accordance to the roads. the roads are only allowed on certain parts of the grid. if we were able to manouever the roads better, we would be able to make better space for our buildings, etc…

if you look at TSTO, they have concrete paths that can be built. ANYTHING can be placed on it just like if it were the grass. if we were able to use the concrete rather then the roads then we would have more FLIXIBILITY on where to place all the items.

  29. Well, they don’t HAVE to show the whole town at once.
One option would be to have Zones/districts/suburbs/streets. Much like TSTO with Krustyland.
This would open up other quest types, too – such as the ability to go inside houses!

Or, restrict the visible area – some of the early MMO PC games did this – look up Ultima’ s “Fog of War” for an example.

Sooner or later (or already) the current design is going to suffer from lag – learn from those who’ve already been down this road.

  30. If they would simply release side walks and pathways then we could keep our towns looking nice and be able to utilize more of the empty land already sitting behind our buildings on the existing road grid by pushing our buildings back and placing decorations in front. More 4x? Sized buildings and some ocean space would be nice as well.

  31. Not sure if this is how it works for sure, but thought I’d throw in my two cents. Couldn’t they just restrict the zoom level like they do in TSTO? I mean, I really like being able to zoom out, and it’s one thing I hate about the Simpsons game, but wouldn’t they be able to have a lot more going on without crashes if they limited how much you could see on the screen? To me that seems like a good balance – lots of content AND lots of land, without the crashes.

  32. I’m a premium player and have more than a grand invested into this game to buy every single item or building they release. Therefore I need more land to show my “stuff” proudly. I’ve paid for it. I should be able to display it. At this point my town looks like a mess a lot of my buildings are in inventory. I want more land to make the town look like a town again with streets. My town is half town half cluster of stuff. Gives us more land even if we have to pay clams for it like someone else suggested. Or do like Simpons and make it unlimited but you pay cash/coin for it. Please! It’s getting to the point where just because of land I’m not going to pay for items anymore and I’m getting to the point where I’m not going to play as much. People like myself are your bread and butter. So give us land please.

  33. I’m a bit late to the party but thought I’d chime in.
I think the issue with land is mainly with premium players and therefore think the easiest solutions is to allocate premium land as well. An extra district or two worth of space that costs clams for those who want it. Freemium players don’t miss out because they don’t need it and premium players who complain about space (like me) have the option to get more.
For me part of the enjoyment of this game is the design elements and I love to create a ‘realistic’ town without having everything crammed together. putting two districts below/left of Chinatown and assuming what will be district 9 would make a big difference to me without affecting the rest of the map for future releases as they could expand the other direction whilst adding a new premium district each time a new row is needed. I hope that makes sense.
Ps. Almost none of my comic con items are displayed and I will have to inventory the Halloween items shortly too. Having two events so close together with only one district in between (which had a LOT of buildings) is not ideal either. That’s all. 🙂

    • I like your way of thinking. There are other games with extra dimensions which are private (no access from your friends) but at least you don’t have to store buildings in the inventory. I’d like more land to do some landscaping (basically it’s the reason why I play these kind of games) but right now I have my buildings lined up to make space for other buildings…not very fancy of that.

  37. Hmmm I have never really understood the need for more space… I am not a free player but just tend to spend my clams/money on players. So I don’t really buy the premium buildings. That said my town is set up as a town requiring best use of their space should be, on a grid system of long narrow streets where my buildings sit side by side to one another. This to me is a copy of the average town center you would see, and makes use of all available space. Any decoration I put behind the building in the space otherwise not being used. Maybe this will help? I do see people just plonking buildings down anywhere and although this may help game play, for me it is the building of the town that is important and is also the best use of space.

I guess some more space would be nice, Me ? I would primarily use it for ‘landscaping’ , meaning i have enough space for every building i own ( i don’t use roads they take too much space imo, I just plant trees trees and trees , and then more trees … so more space for my forest would be welcome 🙂 ,
I just wish we would have some water … as in a small puddle/creek , perhaps 3 or 4 tiles wide …
to make puddles and creeks .. i would like that i think.

  39. I’d like more space so that I can organise my districts and areas better, at the moment they are crammed in and when new things come up they get randomly placed. I do like keeping my money earners out there, but at this stage I’m earning tonnes of coin and run out of things to spend it on. An extra district size area where you can just spread out, which will allow for you to add similar buildings to areas that match without having to completely start again and rearrange would be wonderful. In shopping district shops, I had my district laid out then got more when released. And had to rearrange the same with the mayor west mansion. My suburbia was set up and had to re arrange to fit it. If we hD more space we could leave gaps for potential new buildings. And wouldn’t have everything g crammed so you can’t see streets or people on streets behind buildings. You could make the place look tidy and organised not crammed and dysfunctional. I don’t think you need a theme with new land, just add new land, let us pay to clear it or what have you, but just some extra so we have more room to move and add when we do get new awesome additions.

  40. 1. Increase new space available by 15-25%.

For the clean minimalist way I city plan, I’d like about 10% more overall space. By adding adding at least 15% more to new areas, I can eventually reach and exceed the overall space I want. For players who try to cram everything, 20% or more should be added in new districts.

    2. Consider putting new districts onto different screens.

Similar to visiting friends, expanding the city to even one more screen would double the usuable area. This is a compromise which prevents scrolling around Quahog on one screen, but would address performance issues. Characters should be able to travel to another screen when required by a task. All outside characters don’t need to be visible on the same screen, but a locator should be used to find them.

    3. Perhaps reduce the street by one unit.

I like the current proportion of streets to characters. However, removing one unit would allow me to place streets closer behind some buildings while keeping both sidewalks in view. The solutions mentioned previously would eliminate any need for this change.

Like a museum curator, I like my Quahog to be spacious and orderly, allowing easy viewing around objects, including seeing all sidewalks. I appreciate building side detail that artists were thoughtful to create and make sure at least some of them show.

Some buildings and decos are permanently displayed and the rest are rotated according to season, event or mood.

I priortize my areas to display as follows:

    1. Buildings required by permanent tasks

    2. Current events area about 4 times the size of a district without expansion areas

All event buildings and decos are placed here temporarily then moved or stored afterward. When there is no event, decos or buildings from inventory are displayed.

    3. Office building farm

I use an area between 2 to 3 times a district area without expansion areas.

    4. Residential – Middle Class, Wealthy, Ghetto/ Industrial

    5. Commercial

    6. Theme areas – Waterfront, Wildlife, Superhero

Additional theme areas I don’t have enough space to show – Asiatown, Little Italy, Amusement Parks

send me a new phone (doesn’t have to be new the galaxy s4 is fine.)
When I get the new phone I’ll dl fgtqs.
Then push an upgrade just for me so I can have my characters on one screen and land on another.
    See easy.
Go ahead and give them my email bunny.
I await your reply and thanks for solving this issue.

  42. I’m not a completist when it comes to buildings, but having played all of the events and having one of each freemium building, and a handful of premium items, I have found that I keep running out of room. My general rule for the inventory is that if it doesn’t look awesome or doesn’t accumulate money, it can be stored. But I have a lot of stuff from the Pyramid and Comic Con events that I really like and haven’t wanted to put away yet.

That being said, I just built Adam West’s mansion and have just a tiny little square left, so I will have to clear away some things I like to make room for the fun things I’m going to get for Halloween!

I’m not that grumpy about it but yes, some more space would be nice. I understand you need to test it and everything. Thanks to the folks at TinyCo!
