Clam Results and a New Poll About 1hr Tasks

Hello There Clammers!

As we’re in the middle of the Full Moon Event, and with many players already unlocking Adventure Peter and more starting to unlock Cleveland…..I want to know what you think about the task times TinyCo added this time around to get Stuff.   We also thought, with all the new premium stuff, now would be a great time to share the results of the Clam Bake Poll!

First the new stuff….this week we want to know what YOU think about the 1 hr tasks during this event to get STUFF:
If you didn’t notice many of the tasks required to earn stuff to unlock both Cleveland and Adventure Peter were only 1hr long.  Here’s a list of those  tasks: Jerome Wash Sand Out of Afro- Earned Canteens; Bruce Canteen Spritzer Time- Earned Canteens; Quagmire Photocopy Private Parts- Earned Snakes; Bonnie Flirt with Pool Boy- Earned Snakes; Peter Whip it!- required to unlock Cleveland.

Now let’s get to the results of the clam poll…

WOW is all I can say about the results of this poll.  I wasn’t surprised that the majority of you play with free clams, but I WAS surprised how many of you played with only free clams.

Here are the final numbers:

Have You Purchased Clams on Your Quest for Stuff?

63% -No, Only Free Clams for Me!

18%- Yes, I did but only under the Buy 1 Get 1 Offer That was On My Task List

18%- Yes, I’ve purchased Clams from the Store (not including the Buy 1 Get 1 Offer)

Honestly quite shocked that the margin of those that buy clams to those that don’t buy clams is that much of a contrast (63% to 36%).  I guess the better question would be (and maybe a future poll question), would you buy clams if the premium stuff offered you more bang for your buck? (more stuff, higher payouts etc) Or would you remain freemium, no matter what?  Don’t be surprised if you see this as a question down the road….

  1. Hello all,
I just started playing this game and it seems fun so far. I don’t like the idea of “earning stuff” because when they started collecting “resources” in The Sims the game wasn’t fun anymore because it takes too long to collect.

But I’m going to give this game a chance and see if I like it.

  2. Everything is way too overpriced. I spent the $5 for the buy 1 get 1 but $20-30 TOTAL lifetime spend is about my upper limit. TSTO is even worse, you can’t get much for your $5. I wonder how many freeloaders would spend at least a little bit into the game if everything was more reasonably priced. With TSTO the pricing has made me not want to spend a cent even though with a cheaper model they could have wrung a few dollars out of me

  3. I believe that the poll results are a direct reflection of the gut response that many seasoned gamers felt at the very beginning of our playing relationship with TinyCo….which is: “ASKING FOR TOO MUCH TO SOON”. They should of “Wined and Dined” us longer before drawing out “Hat in Hand” tactics. And as the game has progressed, it is evident that they still don’t fully grasp the subtle dance between the “Freemium” and “Premium” clientele. Too many items require clam purchases. And said items don’t really carry much “bang for your buck” wow factor. I am a premium player. I understand the business model implicitly, and I also fully get that I’m only buying an experience of enjoyment; of pleasure (nothing “tangible” wink wink). But, like paying to see a movie, or concert or say…buying Ice cream ;), one must weigh the “Fun to Fund” ratio. It ultimately is a personal decision each of us make. I only hope that moving forward, TinyCo finally reaches that balance of “win/win” that insures the longevity of a new game…..but more importantly…the health of a company.

  4. I’ve only so far spent money on the “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” offer so far, primarily to get me a second worker. The clams awarded from the set completions allowed me to get some premium items like Consuela, Jake and the Brain Damaged Horse. I spent clams on the Lobster Shanty simply due to its unique design.

I constantly seem to be at the top level (just leveled up to 37 yesterday) and there’s so little going on right now except for trying to get the last 4 inner tubes to unlock Cleveland. I now only would only need 40 clams to unlock him and still they offer Ricky’s Cantina (droppint the tubes) for 150 clams? Puhleeze… they must be smoking some really good stuff over there…

I have no particular attachment to Ricky’s Cantina from the show, so it’ll be more or less useless for me after it is finished dropping items. I have 175k$ in my account, so earning cash is no more a point for me.

I have all available land at this point and completed all character questlines. Many characters are already maxed out. Tricia is feeling like she’s stuck, waiting for the TV station to unlock additional tasks.

If I am supposed to buy some items with real money, they must be either (a) be major characters from the show or (b) have some lasting value. Decorations are IMHO massively overpriced as long as they don’t have something like the payout bonus known from TSTO. Besides, many decorations are massively random bits and pieces and don’t seem to fit well with designing a natural town.

The seemingly endless random earning of unlock items still annoys the crap out of me. I keep tapping away, but it’s more like truly hard work often with a questionable reward at the end. Not a good foundation for spending money…

  6. I would gladly pay for good games when I own them outright. I can easily afford dropping $100+ a month on games, but will never support the freemium model as I believe it is immoral.

All you people spending cash are support an immoral business practice that thrives off of OCD people who must have everything or the dim witted who don’t understand the value of money.

    • Meh….I think you’re just a little harsh there. It’s not an immoral business practice. It’s a business model that has sustainability on average for 1.5-2 years per game (it’s been proven in the market). It’s still up to the companies to produce good games that people will want to spend their money on. I’m one of those OCD NEED EVERYTHING players, but I’ve passed on A LOT of stuff in TQFS because I just don’t see a decent enough return on my investment for it.
But I wouldn’t call the business practice immoral. It’s no different than an ice cream truck parking outside of a Little League game on a hot day KNOWING all the kids will beg their parents for ice cream…

      • Just because people are gullible enough to spend money on something utterly useless doesn’t mean it isOK. The freemium model is destroying gaming by nickel and diming you for a few extra useless pixels. Such as spending about $15 for a shrine that gives me more moon idols. I would gladly pay a few bucks for a game and a few more for updates. This game is clearly a lot of fun to play. I would love to support the developers but I refuse to support this freemium business.

It’s your money, spend it how you want, but it is a down right shame that you spend it in support of such a sneaky and dirty business practice that preys on your addiction.

        • Wow. Honestly? This could turn into such an interesting debate right now but this isn’t about that. So you have your views and you’re entitled to them, but it doesn’t mean everyone has to agree with you. It’s great that that’s the way you think. I just hope you’re not a hypocrite and someone who will go out and spend money on caffeine, alcohol, tobacco products, gambling, other video games, ice cream, living sporting events…you know other sneaky dirty business practices that prey on addictions.
          Have a great day! 🙂

          • Great comment Alissa,
I indeed do spend money on libations. There is some similarity between alcohol and ice cream vs pixels with pretty colors that maybe drop bathtubs or inner tubes but there is also a huge difference. For one, one item is tangible, the other is not. These freemium games are designs to be pay to win. Meaning you pay money to progress quicker or get some useless shiny trinket for a comparatively large amount of money. A great example is Candy Crush, Simpsons: Tapped out, or Real Racing 3. There is no physical way possible to complete the game without spending hundred of dollars. These game are designed to extract the most amount of cash from the few people willing to part with it. Would you not rather have a game that you pay your $10-$20 bucks and enjoy it from beginning to end instead of being nickel and dimed at every turn.

Obviously this business model works. As you can see the app store is packed with freemium games. These games are hoping to extract a few hundred bucks from the few gullible enough to pay for something that is only worth $5-$10.

This game is in my opinion worth $4.99 with updates for $0.99 or $1.99. But $4.99 doesn’t buy you enough clams to do anything useful. I would love to support TinyCo. Just as I supported other games in the past. But I refuse to add to the freemium problem.

I bought the earlier Real Racing games, but will not give a penny to Real Racing 3. I bought Plants vs Zombies but will not give my cash to Plants vs Zombies 2.

I just wish people realized that they are being swindled out of their money and stop supporting this business practice so that games get back to being games and not psychological experiments to extract cash from the gullible.

            • Well, once you drink your drink or eat your ice cream doesn’t it then disappear and become waste? 😉 They’re temporarily tangible items. Much like enjoyment from a game. They’re gone and you want more.
I will say…at least with Tapped Out, you don’t need to pay to win. There is no winning with that game, or this game. They’re builder games, meaning you build the city as you want…with whatever you want. There is no win or lose in it. I think that’s what attracts so many people to both games. And I know plenty of people who don’t spend a dime in either game and enjoy every second of them.
I do agree with you on Candy Crush…either a lot of patience or a lot of money.
But I can tell you…if this game cost $ in the app store, most of the people wouldn’t download it. TC will make way more money off of the freemium model vs. pay model. Even if they have players who won’t spend a dime in the game. Once they get your $4.99, they have you and that’s it. They won’t get more. That’s why video games constantly have new versions. They got your $60 once, now if you want the “newest” version you’ve got to pay another $60. That’s the only way they make money.
Aren’t the people who will maybe spend $60 on this game over the lifetime of the game…just as “gullible” as the people who spend $60-100 (and stand in line) every time a new Call of Duty comes out? Business is business…in the end it’s all the same. Think about it…

  7. I don’t mind buying clams for some premium items but I find some of the animated decorations grossly overpriced… Yes, I’m looking at you, Golden Peter Statue. Also, I find it highly insulting when they give discounts on them without offering anything to the users who paid full price 😦

  8. I like the 1 hour tasks for earning stuff. What’s frustrating is doing long quest tasks (16, 20 hours) and having no item attached to it. Chris (can’t quit touching himself) and Peter are on long tasks for this event and I need them for Cleveland, since for me I think only Bruce and Tyrone are earning canteens.
