There’s No Place Like Quahog – Review & How Did You Do Poll

Hey there readers, I’d like to welcome you to Addicts Land, where today I’m going to be talking, ok waffling about rainbows, witches, flying monkeys, or to put it simply the event that just was, There’s No Place Like Quahog. After 3 weeks of munchkins, wizarding  and wickedness it’s all over but for the poll, and hey we all made it out the other side of the rainbow. And when it came to the Wicked Witch, well I think victory was ours!!! Or was it? She lives!!!  She lives!!!

It’s no secret I’ve wanted an Oz event since FGQFS was in its beta infancy, I’m a fan of the books, movies, musicals, anything Oz. In fact I sit writing this on my iPad which has an Oz case, I’ve a cold drink at my side sitting on an Oz coaster and when I have my supper tonight I’ll use my Oz salt & pepper pots. I’ve Oz voodoo dolls, Russian dolls…. I think you get the message, I’m a MASSIVE fan.

image

And I’ve been clicking my heels wishing for this event for over 2 years now, but finally TinyCo made my dreams of an Oz event come true. But did my dream turn into a nightmare or did TinyCo have a heart and give me the event I’d been wishing for?

Well it all started with a teaser from TinyCo and I was suddenly filled with excitement and trepidation all at once. Thankfully I didn’t have long to wait and a day later the land of Oz literally landed in the event area, bringing with it a plethora of Oz-some content to get the event started. There was Dorothy Lois, Scarecrow Peter, Toto Brian and a whole bunch of flying monkeys. And suddenly you couldn’t have wiped the smile off my face with a broomstick. But did that smile stay in place for the whole 3 weeks of the event or did it fade faster than a rainbow, well join me on the yellow brick road as I share my thoughts on the There’s No Place Like Quahog event.

image

The event certainly started on a very positive note for me, as once again we were seeing an event with a link to the Family Guy TV show, Oz makes many appearances in the show, in fact it appeared as early as the 2nd episode of the show, and it’s obvious Seth McFarlane is a fan. (You’ll find a rundown of Oz in Family Guy HERE).

image

I was also immediately delighted to see this was a 3 week event, I think this works well for events, not so short that there’s all out panic, and not so long that we’re looking to what’s next weeks before the current event ends as its just gone on too long for some. Don’t get me wrong if they dedicated 52 weeks to Oz I’d not complain, but I think some of you would.

This event also seemed to bring back a real sense of fun to the game, fellow players enjoyment radiated into the comments on here, its been a long while since I read comments by so many of you saying they were loving an event, loving the content, loving TinyCo, okay maybe I’m pushing the love a bit far there but you know what I mean. We were riding that rainbow and just having fun. And that really made me smile as when you love something as much as I love Oz, you want other people to love it too. So thanks for adding that little bit of magic to the event for me.

image

I also knew the way I play would probably change during this event as I developed clam fever and went over to the something, something, clam side for this one.  And yes you probably know I used a few choice words instead of something, something when I realised just how much I’d spent, lol.  Who on earth did I think I was spending that many clams. Bunny?

So this was an opportunity for me to see an event from a completely premium players perspective and I have to say in this event having premium characters such as Toto Brian, Winged Monkey Chris and Wizard if Oz Stewie made a big difference, I found myself way ahead on where I’d be playing freemium, I can definitely see how many prefer to spend their dime rather than their time, but me I’d still rather strategize my way through an event so I think I’m happy to go back to my hybrid freemium/premium play in future.

image

And although I didn’t need it I was very glad to see the event extended for a day to give players a chance to finish up on unlocks, and me another day of buying yellow brick road. However I do have concerns about the late timing of the announcement as many players had already started spending clams to rush tasks and such as they thought the end was imminent. In future if it’s possible earlier notice of an extension would help and an immediate pop up in the game to advise of it. But I know things happen that even TinyCo can’t foresee so since I’m still feeling the Oz love I’ll let them off with a warning this time, lol.

But I continue to like the fact that TinyCo are showing with actions what they’ve been saying recently, that they are listening. We saw  a shorter event, full characters not costumes and no phase cuts offs. I said before that I believe they want to re-engage with the Community and keep improving the game. I think they just don’t know how to have a meeting of the minds with players but if they didn’t care they wouldn’t have bothered to even listen to the feedback we all provided after the recent event. I’m not saying they can take every suggestion and make it happen, but in this event I saw them respond to the following requests I’ve seen made by players.

FORMAT:
A 3 week event with no timers on character to be unlocked and no timers on items to purchase in the Fallen Farmhouse. And the rigid timed case format used in The Hauntening was also gone, meaning players could work away at their own pace without worrying falling a day behind would see them punished at the end of each weekly Phase.Thank you TinyCo. In fact the only Tik Tok we had to worry about was a decoration.

CONTENT:
More Family Guy TV show linked content. As I said earlier Oz characters and references frequently appear in the TV show, so Family Guy related content to keep us happy.

TRAINING RESOURCES:
I felt the task lengths for drops and frequency of drops were good, it was possible to constantly keep training Munchkins at the Munchkin Academy. In the past low resource drops have seen a bottleneck when this format has been used.

CHARACTER DROPS:
With regards to gameplay it was good to see less characters have multiple tasks for different drop items, I know there was still some crossover but that will always happen as core characters that were unlocked in the early Districts are used in events to allow newer players to join in events. I really think TinyCo got the balance quite well in this event and used a good ratio of characters and buildings with drops. Also just about every character task useful for the event dropped Emeralds, another good move.

CHARACTERS:
What did I like, well we got characters not costumes. Yes, many weren’t original Oz characters but Family Guy character versions, but I can understand why TinyCo played it this way and think they did a great job with the character choices and their visual tasks, well apart from Toto Brian, what did the tenacious little terrier do get such lame visual tasks. If I were him I’d been asking the Wizard for new ones. And as much as I’m a tiny bit disappointed I didn’t complete my Oz collection, missing out on Munchkin Mayor West. I think it was neat that TinyCo made the four BFFs, (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman & Lion), all unlockable, and didn’t make one of the set premium. The same goes for Glinda & Wicked Witch.

WEEKLY CHALLENGES:
The weekly challenges were once again toned down and very achievable for all players and it was good to see this in all three challenges, no horrid surprise in the final challenge like there was in The Hauntening. Looks like TinyCo has realised we want a challenge not a mission impossible.

STRUCTURE:
For the most part there was no surprises, everything you needed to do in each phase was spelt out early by simply moving through the first few parts of the main Questline for each Phase. No last-minute unlock surprises.  This was particularly helpful in letting players have a shot at unlocking the Wicked Witch.

GAMEPLAY:
They seem to be taking on board issues that derailed previous events, for example in Phase 3 tornadoes would capture characters. We’ve seen similar gameplay before, remember when all our characters were turned into werewolves during Death at the Drive-In and we couldn’t use them even although they were essential to progressing in the event, Well TinyCo averted  a repeat of this by bringing another handful of characters not being used fo the event into play in order to bait the tornadoes, meaning very few essential characters were taken off task.

SUPPORT:
There has been definite improvements in this area, but more work needs done, for a small company they are trying hard to have a good system in place. However there is still an over reliance on sending standard responses to players, which at times either appears to ignore their concerns or miss the nature of their complaint completely.

Now before you accuse me of being too nice to TinyCo there are a few problem areas that still seem raise their ugly heads event after event.

MYSTERY BOXES:
It’s no mystery what my feelings on Mystery Boxes are, I continue to despair at the way TinyCo implements Mystery Boxes in events. Yes, I know we don’t need to buy them but to put an event character in a box that costs 130 clams and then fill it with materials that can repeat and old decorations from the Candyman Event shows a bit of disregard for premium players. I mean the Finger Licking Good Tree could be bought with event currency in the Candyman Event and the Giant Jelly Bear although a premium item only cost 75 clams. So why would TinyCo think these are good enough prizes in a 130 clam mystery box? Munchkin Mayor West could have and in my opinion should have been put in the Once Upon A Mystery Box. At least if you took a few try’s at getting him in that you’d at worst end up with a costume or character you missed previously. Please TinyCo, show some good will towards premium players and change the way you do the mystery boxes. Having spent 785 clams on the 3 premium characters, leaving me gambling to complete the set with Munchkin Mayor West is just wicked. And TinyCo we gathered clear data from players after the last event about how we’d like to see the Mystery Box evolve, please consider it. After all over in the other game I play the arrival of a recent event mystery box was met with great excitement and much spending of donuts, there’s something wrong when in FGQFS Mystery Boxes are only met with anger and frustration. How to fix this isn’t a mystery, bring the cost down, and improve the content. Simples!!!

BOSS BATTLES:
I found it bizarre TinyCo raised the battles level of the Wicked Witch from 4X to 5X during the event. I’ve praised TinyCo in the past for bringing the top level down to 4X and giving players a shot at hitting the highest level, in this event it was already a tough ask at 4X so I honestly do t know why the 5X returned with no warning midway through the event. Still no resource counter when Boss is in time out, we’ve been asking for this event after event.

FACESPACE:
No FaceSpace sets for the Oz characters. TinyCo completing these sets for a little clam reward is very popular with us players, please bring it back.

QUESTLINES:
Now the dialogue and tasks were fantastic, no issues at all there, but what I do find troublesome is having a character than needs unlocked being essential to completing each Phases Main Questline. This causes a delay in players getting new content and maybe needs looked at. Also please bring in a reward for completing the final Phase Questline, 10 clams or so, an incentive to finish it.

DROPS:
There continues to be no rhyme or reason to these, in the Oz event Common turned into Rare, Rare dropped like Common. Uncommon has a life of its own. That’s all I’m going say on this subject.

MUNCHKIN ACADEMY:
The Munchkin Academy probably caused a lot of sighs as many players do not like the format of gathering items to create another item to attack another thing. But this one wasn’t too bad for me, the resource drops were good and the training times acceptable. The only real fault I have is in week 1 TinyCo caused confusion by showing 6 training spaces available but then you found you could only use 4. Now for me the 4 spaces were adequate but the set up made it very easy to accidentally spend clams, as if you just did 6 quick taps without paying attention, thinking you were just filling the 6 spaces it was very easy to accidentally speed up training for clams, as the 5th tap would bring up the speed up with clams option and the 6th would activate speeding. Thankfully TinyCo corrected this in Week 2 but not before a few players had inadvertently sped up training, wasting precious clams.

So fellow addicts, that’s some of my thoughts, and I want to stress they are just my thoughts, they in no way reflect what Bunny or Lotty felt about the event, but before I ask for your thoughts I want to say one last thing about the event and that’s how fantastic the animation has been yet again, really top work from the guys at TinyCo.

Anyway that’s my ramblings, now I want you to tell me your thoughts. Cause I honestly do give a flying monkey about how fellow players get on. I’d like to know if you were happy somewhere over the rainbow, or did you find yourself wishing you were back in boring, old Quahog.  But please don’t turn this into a What the Deuce post by releasing the flying monkeys in your comments as Bunny will throw me head first into the nearest tornado if you do. Please give us your feedback and thoughts in a nice shimmery good witch way. Tell us what you like, don’t like? What you’d like to see more of, what you’d like to see less off. What your thoughts on shorter three-week events are? Share with us everything and anything you think would improve FGQFS, as TinyCo do read this blog and of course Bunny also takes your feedback to TinyCo. And if you can please take a minute to complete the end of event poll at the end of this event I’d be very grateful. Just for your information having played this event truly premium it got me thinking we don’t ask the opinions of premium players as much as we maybe should, so quite a few questions are directed at premium players only. If you’re freemium just answer those that apply to you.

Now before I go there’s another couple of things I’ve got to say. Hey did I just hear you snore? No, okay then, well firstly thanks to every addict who took the time to read our ramblings during the event, shared hints  or who just popped in to the comments to say Hi or Thank You. All much appreciated, you really are the reason There’s No Place Like The Addicts Site.

And last but not least I’ve always wondered where the red brick road leads to in Oz, did TinyCo really need to cause me further brain ache by adding a purple road. Wicked, wicked, wicked TinyCo.

And just incase you can’t see the poll or find it jumps about when you’re trying answer, here’s the direct link:

  1. I liked Oz. It was the first time I completed a storyline in time.
Most my leftover emeralds went to form a large poppy field. I was feeling sentimental still from Remembrance day and I love poppies.

  2. Wanted to add that although I spent claims on scarecrow Peter I didn’t mean too. Set him too close to Al’s and accidentally unlocked. Would have bought Toto Brian instead otherwise…

  3. didn’t like the fact that I wasn’t able to attack the witch for over a week waiting to get Scarecrow Peter. All turned out fine in end, with the extra day. whittled down lion joe to 160 clams, then paid to complete his task to get the evil witch for 24 clams. Pays to have good clam management.

  4. This, for me, has been the best event since the first Star Trek event. The pirate event is a close second. As a mostly freemium player I don’t expect to get everything, but I did get all the free characters and Toto. I hope they keep going like this for future events.

  5. My only complaint with boss battles is that if you don’t get to the max level they do this stupid passive aggressive “punishment” and won’t let you see the inventory of weapons.

    What the hell?

  6. Loved the Oz event, characters are still out finishing up quest lines. Spent under fifty clams on timers, and bought Toto Brian. Don’t mind the extra day added after spending the clams, it gave time to work on the side quests. Was unable to finish the main quest line, too bad, would have liked to finish in order to complete the story. Did Lois get her shoes back?!

    • Well Dorothy Lois said when they saved Glinda they got their stuff, whether than included her shoes, well maybe w’ll find out if there’s a sequel, lol. But I can confirm all the technicolour fun left Dorothy Lois with a migraine and the Wicked Witch went on to star in Frozen. Who’d have known. 😀

Well, my comment about the tediousness of the get (x) to buy (y) to get (z) didn’t get published here. Methinks the positive comments are due to site moderation instead of love of the event.

  10. I have almost 50 million coins. TinyCo needs to come up with some useful use for these coins.

I’ve also been over the Level 100 MAX since the day it was introduced.

TinyCo needs to increase to Level 200 and provide some recognition for high levels — like clam rewards for reaching the milestones.

TinyCo also needs to offer some mystery boxes that cost 1 million coins per try — like for good characters like Koolaid Man, Bottomtooth, Will Riker, etc. What we really need are characters to round out Tan Lines.

  11. I found that it was the worst event, proberbly so far. I can’t think of any other that has been this bad. Normally on the five week events I find I have lost about a day per week, so I enter week five about four days late. I enter week three with thirty five hours remaining, until they extended it, but by that time it made no difference. It was taking around eight or nine days to unlock a character due to the worst drop rates I’ve experienced. Added to that I was unable to proceed without unlocking the character only made it worse. It took nineteen days to do what should have been done in fourteen, or less. For once I’d like to see an event where all the drops are always so it’s possible to work out how long it’s going to take to unlock a character, or building, rather than leaving it to chance.

    • To me it was completely different – this was the first event I’ve ever been through where I finished all tasks and unlocks before the week ended. I’m 100% freemium and this was the first event where I didn’t have to spend my hard-won clams to keep up with the event. I got every (free) character and every building… by far the best event for me

  12. Imho this event was very well executed, with the help of the one day extention I was able to complete it freemium.

I have 2 issues with every event though.

    1. The added quest lines take a long time to complete and often require core characters. The new event started a while ago and I still have to complete the wicked witch. I also have 2 open quests from Halloween that I cannot complete because I don’t have stewie and I cannot unlock him because his items drop rarely and require main characters to do 20 hour tasks.

    2. Premium characters and buildings seem completely irrelevant unless you love them or need the drops so you can spend less time on the game.
Premium characters and buildings do not seem to earn more like they do in tsto, and from the other commonts I am reading here money seems to be irrelevant too after some point.
This feels wrong because in tsto I feel a need to buy any character/building combo regardless of whether or not they help the event or are appealing in and of themselves

  15. One of the things that I’d like to see is when an item drop is no longer that relevant that there could be another choice for a different item, example Herbert dropping bananas, ( and I think there was someone else who only dropped bananas too) while at first they were necessary to clear flying monkeys in order to get haystacks, by week 2-1/2 we were busy collecting other items ( I forget now what it was, sorry) haystacks weren’t really that important anymore, so it would have been nice if Herbert (et. al.) could have also had the option to drop the other thing, like they did with the oz characters having a choice of 3 water weapons.
And yes the whole deal with that munchkin academy showing 6 spaces and only allowing to use 4.. That’s a wtd for shore. Seems like they could show 4 until you paid or whatever to get the extra 2. Maybe it was just to expedite
Another thing would have been to be able to identify who was caught up in the tornado, (or other thing if a character is going to be captured ) say by tapping on it and their pic would pop up, something like that
Another thing that’s always been an issue is when a character or building is offered for sale and it has a drop associated, they don’t always include the drop rate with the info. Please include the drop rate TC ! ( thanks to you guys for that)
Overall it was a great event, I was able to keep up , I only spent clams on toto, and didn’t feel like I was lagging behind like I usually am in so many other events
Ok, that’s it, thanks for listening?

    Like

    • Thanks, great feedback. The tornadoes did actually show who was trapped, when you tapped on one and the launch screen came up, the name of the character trapped was up top on the left. So keep an eye out for that in future events. But I like your idea of a little image of the character. Good luck with the new event.

    • I do need to second the idea that although they tell us premium characters always drop a certain item, I really wish the timing of the task was mentioned.

I’m currently regretting Chris’s costume because his task for boxes is more than twice as long ad the others. It throws of my timing and scheduling, and it feels a bit of a rip off.

I think in the future I won’t buy them till some site somewhere has the info on the timing of the task.

      Like

      • As a Great and Powerful Bunny once told me ;-), Chris’ drop is guaranteed (“Always”), while the other characters’ drops are “Rare”, so there is definitely an advantage to having Chris, if you want to plan things based on timing…

        Like

        • Definitely, the rare drops have been just that, having that few guaranteed a day will help you. But I do agree TinyCo should have had the drop info showing in the information box in the store.

      • I never even saw them. The Oz event ran so well for me by that I had completed everything and got every character before the final weekly challenge started. I went through the store and bought all the stuff that had been available all event like the rainbow horse on Monday afternoon while I was waiting for the last weekly task to start. I didn’t think to check it again on either of the final days of the event.

  18. agree that the lack of notice of the extension was a big mistake. It was better that they lat it end on time if they could not give sufficient notice. Nobody would have already given up or get desperate and spend a lot of clams they may regret

The night before the scheduled end i calculated that it was impossible for me to complete the tasks for the Wicked Witch with one day left, SO I GAVE UP and turned to cleaning up some old tasks. If I had known it would be extended I would have easily got the Witch without spending clams.

A day or three off between events would be nice since the same main characters are needed in most cases (Peter, Lois, Joe, Mort mostly).

Obviously not counting the few new ones for the Xmas event. I only have 3 pieces of land left to buy and then I’m done!
