Where the Hell….? Q*Bert

Snow is falling, all around us, Q*Berts falling, having fun, ’tis the season of love and….., oh sorry there I go again, mind wandering off in any old direction. A bit like Q*Bert on his cubes. Why do I keep going back to Q*Bert, well apart from the fact he’s as cute as can be, he’s only gone and bounced into Quahog as part of the Quahog’s Not So Silent Night.

Now all my fellow gaming geeks probably recognise Q*bert from his arcade game hey day but just where have we seen this little bundle of fun in Family Guy before? Well he’s made one appearances to date in the TV show and been referenced in another and I’m going to highlight them here.

So join me on a journey bouncing along some colourful cubes as we stroll through Q*Berts time in Family Guy.

Stuck Together – Torn  Apart – Series 3, Episode 19

Just a quick reference but very funny  to Q*Bert in this episode, when the Pacman ghosts become fed up listening to Pacman’s woes about his split from Miss Pacman they deal him a really low blow when they threaten to go hang out with Q*Bert instead.

Chick Cancer – Season 5, Episode 7

Stewie is in his element when he sees an opportunity to mock his old friend Olivia after her Hollywood career falters, which leads to her taking on lowly jobs such as appearing at the Quahog Mall. Never one to miss an opportunity to pile on the misery Stewie hatches a plan to humiliate her. But a funny thing happens on the way to the mall and Stewie finds himself in love with Olivia, but unfortunately Olivia is just not interested.

image

Tormented by Olivia’s rejection Stewie finds himself adopting Quagmire’s treat them mean keep the keen attitude towards Olivia in a final attempt to woo her, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t go and work work and they start to bond over ice cream and trips to the park. But things start to go downhill when Stewie’s jealousy rears its ugly little head, leading to a series of arguments.

image

A particularly heated argument bizarrely leas to them getting married but it all ends in tears when Stewie finds Olivia ‘cheating’ on him, although in her defence sharing play-doh with your friend Victor hardly constitutes an all out affair. But Stewie is furious and does what any Stewie would do, he sets fire to the playhouse with Olivia and Victor inside.

Now what’s this got to do with Q*Bert, well I’m getting there. Later  Stewie reflects on how living with Q*Bert was easier than being married to Olivia. In an hysterical little cutaway we see Stewie trying to sleep on a cube on Q*Bert’s pyramid, only to be disturbed as Q*Bert jumps from cube to cube lighting it up as he goes along. This leads a sleep deprived Stewie to lose his temper and scream at Q*Bert that he won’t be paying a share of the electric bill.

Do you remember any of these episodes? Or have you never seen them? Do you now plan to watch any of them? And did any of you play Q*Bert in the arcades?

  1. WOW!! I just typed in Qbert on a regular google search and there is an Apple app for the game! It has an original version and a “rebooted” version which is more 3-D like the games kids are interested in today. I played a round and can see the rebooted version being fun and addicting. Just thought I’d share this interesting info. The game is called Qbert rebooted.

  2. I don’t know what happened. I was a kid in the 1980s. I remember going to a few big video arcades, also when arcade machines were in many of the local corner shops, even the Atari 2600 (which was at my grandmother’s house – it belonged to my uncles and they are only a few years older than me). However, if you had asked me who Q-Bert was a few years ago, all I probably would have given back is a blank expression.

It was only after watching the Adam Sandler movie “Pixels” and the Disney movie “Wreck-It-Ralph” that I began to notice Q-Bert as a video game character. I am sure that he came to younger people’s attention at this time as well (probably thanks to those movies), as they began to ask me “you were a kid in the 1980s, did you like the Q-Bert game(s)?” to which I would reply that I had no idea who the character even was / is.

I looked the game up online after repeatedly being asked about him. The game did look familiar and also like one that (yes) I actually HAD played once or twice many years ago. So maybe I did in fact know the Q-Bert game after all (just not his name or as a character)? Maybe I was just too busy back then playing the likes of other games such as Frogger, Space Invaders, Asteroids and (of course) Donkey Kong to notice him. Sorry Q-Bert.. 😣

    • I agree wholeheartedly, many will think of Wreck-It-Ralph and Pixels for Q*Bert, that was his second coming, lol. But great memories again Jacob, I like it when things spark nice memories, like in this it took you back to being at your grandmothers.

      • My grandmother actually still lives in that same house (she will be turning 80 next year 🎉) and has the Atari 2600 in storage. I have not played it in years. Perhaps I should plug it in again next time I visit her? I know that she has a lot of memories with it as well. I remember one of the games on it (was) is tennis and she would always play a game against me every time I visited her. I always told her not to go easy on me. 😀

        • I think that sounds a fab idea, tell her there’s a Russian Tigger who wants to know if she can still beat her grandson at tennis, lol.

That is if the console still works. I don’t know if anyone has played it for 20 years (or more). 🤔

Talking about older video consoles, my aunt told me that she still has an NES (which belonged to my cousins) as well. I also had one but it stopped working. First of all, the game used to pop up (and not stay in properly), so I used to stick a “C” sized (or was it a “D” size?) battery in order to keep the game down. This actually worked great! 👍
Anyway, the problem I had with it was that I would turn it on but sometimes only get a white screen. So I used to do what other people used to do – take the game out and blow into it, seeing if that would make any difference. Sometimes my NES would start working again (but it began to not work too often). After a few years, I decided to just give it away. I probably should have kept the games though. I had a big library of them. Although, while cleaning up a few years ago, I did find one loose game – “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (you can see Christian Slater playing this one on an NES in a scene from the movie “The Wizard). 😄

  5. I’m sorry if this is a repeat my last post disappeared. I know this is probably not the right place to post this as it has nothing to do with the topic, but where it’s an old issue I’m not sure of where to post it. So back in 2015 Halloween, there where silver, blue, and brown stolen cars that megs friends where stuffed in. I don’t think it was in that event, maybe it was, but we were able to get those cars at some point in a mystery box with event currency. If I’m remembering correctly. Now I’ve had those cars for a while. Well they disappeared when the new event hit. I have been told by tiny co that those where not ever given out. So please tell me does anyone have those stolen cars in your Quahogs? I know I didn’t just make it up.

    • I don’t have them in my inventory and don’t recall getting them as they were part of the event area and left when it did. I vaguely remember an issue with stolen cars after the event though. Anyone else?

    • They were, I had one that was actually stuck when I removed it from my inventory during an event over the summer and I couldn’t remove it from my map until the following weekly update.

      • I remember they pulled some decorations as they were causing issues but need think back to what event it was. Cars jumpy to mind for some reason.

      • Yeah my memory was right, we didn’t get them as part of Death at the Drive In, instead they appeared during the Dog Multiverse mini event in an oops that caused issues with them being stuck in our games, couldn’t store, and caused others games to crash. So they were to be pulled back out of the game, due to issues I never touched them in my game. Hope this and info other player has given helps you. You’ll find it talked about in this post and in the comments, https://familyguyaddicts.com/2015/11/12/dog-multiverse-is-live/

        • Thanks for everyones help. I appreciate it. I knew I had them and I knew I got them in a mystery box bought with event currency. When I was told that I never would have been given them, I had to get some help from my fellow addicts.

      • Which is exactly what I did as well. They wouldn’t move and where there was an event going on I didn’t want to bother tiny co with useless mail. I figured I’d wait till it was over. Then mine disappeared as well as soon as new update hit. I thank you for your help, it makes me feel better when I can go to people that as much as addicts as I am for help.

  6. As soon as I saw Q*Bert was being added to the game it instantly reminded me of this episode, and the cutaway in particular, definitely one of my favourites.

  8. Ah, yes: The good old days when you had to take a bus downtown, to the only real arcade in town, and buy a roll of tokens or quarters (I live in Canada), in order to play video games… Q*Bert and Pengo were two of my favourites, I must admit! (Of course, Pac Man too, but I think that was a bit earlier.)
