Zoom & Quality Changes w/Update

Hey there all you crazy people. Wait…maybe I am the only crazy one. Lol. Anywho…some additional changes came to the game recently that a lot of players may be noticing, so I wanted to break it down for you.

Consuela Technical Support 1
TinyCo’s latest update, 1.1.15 for Android, included many performance improvements to help with many of you that have stated issues with the game crashing. This did include limiting the Zoom features for lower end, older, and other devices. This change was critical to help with those startup and memory-related crashes that were happening.

Now for a general list of the Android devices that were impacted by the change. (Most of you may not have even noticed much of them. I know I did not on my Galaxy S4.)

Kindle Fire: KFJWI
ASUS MemoPad: ME173X
SM-N900T
HTC One_M8
T200
C6903
LG-D800
GT-P3113
Galaxy S3
Galaxy S4
Galaxy Note
Galaxy Exhibit
Tablet RCA
Kindle Fire HDX
Xperia Z1 C6903
HTC One
Now this is where we need YOUR help. The Update was for Android, but many of you iOS users (specifically iPAD) are stating you are seeing this change impact you too. To help us narrow down the impact to iOS, we ask that you send us the following information:

– PlayerID (Menu, Account, Number & Letters in lower right side. NOT from start screen)
– Device make and model
– When this started happening
– If you play on multiple devices, and what those devices are.

Please email this info ASAP to familyguyaddicts@gmail.com so we can forward it on to the Team at TinyCo for investigation. If easier, send us a screenshot of the Player ID to make sure we have it accurate.
UPDATE 4:30PM EST: Thanks so much for your response. Looked into this further and it looks like the update for some specific iOS devices was pushed along with the Android one. The following devices WILL see changes in Zoom and Resolution. These changes had to be made and were CRITICAL in keeping the devices working properly with the game. (These were the ones with the highest reported game crashes and memory issues.)
iPad 1
iPad 2
iPod Touch 4th Gen
iPad Air
iPad Mini Retina
So the changes are here to stay to allow these particular devices to be able to respond properly to the game itself and continue to be compatible. They will still monitor for any future issues and to see if any can be removed off the lists after the event. Thanks again for the help.
Thanks again for all your help. Working as a community really does help all players in the long run.

  1. With all the issues during comic con, I feel like the event should be expanded. The Stewie, Joe, and Bonnie hero costumes waited til the last minute to become available. The zoom problem is making it difficult to kill mutant Stewies.

  2. Well, I’m not holding my breath, but as of 11:30pm PDT, the zoom out view is restored for iOS7 on iPad air. It is such a relief! I can navigate my town much better and don’t have a feeling of claustrophobia, needing to hold my face away from the screen. It just makes sense to be able to view more of the town at once; Otherwise, it just feels like I’m seeing fragments of buildings. Hope this remains…
If so, Thanks TinyCo, for responding to player feedback. Also, thanks FG Addicts, for mediating and creating awareness and community around this addictive game. Just got Iron Baby and at 190,000 Blam!

  3. Cudos to Tinyco for responding so quickly to several issues here of late. Drop rates and the crashing thing. There’s not to many companies that would do what they are doing.
Heck I know of one company off hand who seems to be ignoring a crashing problem and they’re loosing players due to it.
So hurah to Tinyco for at least trying.

  6. I use an ipad 2 and never had any crashes running the game. Now, after this so-called update, I’m constantly crashing.

As far as I’m concerned now, the game is unplayable for me. I’ve been a player since Day 1, but this is only a game and not real life. To continue in the game, I’ve been forced to spend more and more time just to keep up with the additions. Maybe it’s time to let go.

Just like TSTO, they keep introducing new “currency” and our dollars go unused. Sorry for my rant.

  7. My game was crashing like crazy the other day and then today it was suddenly fine. I don’t know if zoom had anything to do with it. All I know is that it seems to be working fine today. What was actually pretty funny was I didn’t even notice the zoom changes until I saw I post on Facebook about it from TinyCo. I do hope that the ability to zoom far back is available again. But, not having the option doesn’t really bug me.

  8. As it stands now, modifying my town just became several orders of magnitude harder because moving a building across the map is now tedious.

As it stands now, collecting from all of my buildings takes 3 to 4 times longer than it used to.

As it stands now, keeping track of nerd spawns is a giant pain in the rear.

As it stands now, finding characters is also a giant pain (I realize they’re working on a tracker feature for this but that’s not here yet).

Most people are not seeing a noticeable benefit from this change, they’re seeing more aggravation from the changes than the crashes. I understand that developers need to make hard calls once in a while for the good of the game, this is not one of them.

This zoom change is called “The Lazy Way Out”. What they have is a memory management problem. The more they add to the game the slower it gets. The bigger our Quahog’s get the slower the game gets.

I run on a 2nd Gen iPad. The only crashes I’ve seen are still there and they have always been consistent (even now). The game crashes 99% of the time when you close out of it and attempt to launch it again while its still in memory. If you close it out of the background processes first then it will launch every time without issue. Does the game load slowly for me YES? Does it load slower and respond slower than on my wife’s current gen iPad? Absolutely, but guess what she still has the same crash issue.

They’ve degraded game play in multiple facets to take the easy way out of a crash issue that’s not actually fixing the real issue, its a band aid at best. The addition of District 9 will add more buildings, more characters, and more animations for the game to keep track of and that means even more memory load. So what will they do then? Force us to zoom in even further?

What they should do until they find a long term solution is make the change OPTION… so that those of us who want to live with the possibility of a crash, or never had crashes from this, can choose to turn the zoom back on to its original maximum. Its not uncommon for games that span multiple devices to have settings that can be tweaked for performance by the player. It also isn’t a hard thing to add in coding wise.

  9. Again, this goes back to proper testing, which obviously TinyCo doesn’t do. Having run software development teams before, the first thing you do is establish the minimum platform you want everyone to run smoothly on (the lowest common denominator), then everything above that should run fine, unless there is something wrong with the specific device. It just seems to me, based on their responses I’ve seen here and elsewhere, that they are trying to be everything for everyone and that just isn’t a viable way to go because then you end up making knee-jerk changes like this when things start falling apart. They should have started saying no to a lot of things early on because now it looks like they’ve bitten off more than they can chew. By the way, on my iPad Mini Retina, nothing has changed… I don’t know if it matters that mine is the 128gb version.

    • Lol. You crack me up in your assumptions. Who says they don’t test? You would be amazed as just how much they DO go through behind doors. The thing is players want new stuff and want it now. They are doing the best they can with what they have as well as trying to keep up with player demands. I still see them performing and doing a whole lot better than the other apps out there on same level. 😉

This is an event. Events are huge. Events, no matter the game, are plagued with glitches. So it comes down to how quickly they respond and correct. Still doing pretty good in my mind. 😉

  12. I’m using a Galaxy Note and can’t say I see any differences. What really gets me is that the Ron Perlman update fixed any crashes I had, it was great. Then the Felicia update hit… The game suddenly started to lag and stutter randomly. Tapping buildings too quickly makes the game crash, a character levelling up is very crash prone again, tapping nerds can cause a crash (mostly the redshirts for some reason), bombing minion Stewies randomly crashes the game, starting a new quest line causes random crashes, moving the camera too fast can crash, it’s quite annoying. I tried removing all animated buildings and anything that wasn’t needed for tasks, cleared cache, reinstalled, nothing has helped.
I can understand there being memory issues but I sometimes see a crash after 10 seconds just by tapping a building and without even moving the camera. The odd thing is the game can run perfectly at times with no crashes.

    tl;dr
My game still crash, me sad 😦

  14. I’m sorry but the change to the zoom level is almost a game breaker for me on my HTC One m8 as it means it takes much longer and is more annoying to navigate a large town area due to the number of swypes needed and it’s very easy to miss a completed quest or minion such as the current trekkies and has made the bombing of the mini Stewies more difficult, also this maybe unrelated but the game has become far more laggy despite being on a high end device.

I wanted them to allow for a full zoom out not to decrease the zoom level and make the game worse because of this, there has to be a better solution to the problem they’re facing.

    • Well they JUST launched it to test it. Give them some time to see how it plays out. Especially after the event and all this extra activity goes away. Then they can adjust the list as they narrow the list of impacted devices down more.

All they can do is test and see what works, then change and adapt. I am just glad they are this involved in the game to do so much on players responses. 🙂

  15. Thank you, FGA staff for keeping up on this. Your dedication to the crowd here is impressive and very welcome. My devices (HP Slate 7 tablet [older] and LG-D850 phone [top-of-the-line flagship]) were not affected by the zoom issue, but I can definitely see where this would affect someone’s enjoyment and ability to play (TSTO is, conversely, has WAY too small text for me and does not zoom as well as FGQFS).

One thing I will agree with, that TinyCo can only react to all of the device standards out there and do their best to shift with the hardware and spec demands of everything. My LG is the latest and greatest, and supports HD, yet I lost the ability to even download Angry Birds Star Wars I & II, go figure (yet I can download the older Birds).

I will say that this game is a resource hog. Even though Android is supposed to like running stuff at near max RAM capacity and keep things staged to run, FGQFS eats up 30-45% of my TOTAL RAM on either device (and they have 1Gb and 2Gb, respectively). No surprise there are total crash-outs (I have experienced the freeze-screen thing sometimes when I try to activate anything in-game with a popup like Bombing runs, etc).

    • That’s fine of course but the change has made the game noticeably worse on my handset by meaning it takes much more effort and time to navigate, made completed quests and items such as the mini Stewies and trekkies harder to spot and had also introduced lag where there was none before, for me this is more of a problem than the occasional crash and is annoying enough to Lee my enjoyment of the game significantly.

There must be a better way…

  20. Just read the official response of Tiny Co on this matter, on their Facebook page.
It´s quite offensive towards the brands that make this machines/devices.
Actually, it’s more a case of a “low-memory game”, rather than “low-memory devices”. That´s the real problem.

    Like

    • So what you are saying is they should make a game ONLY for brand new devices? Limit the players to only those that buy new all the time? Force people to spend lots of money on only new things? That seems kind of silly to me. I doubt ANY app company out there will do that. Unless they own and manufacturer the device themselves, like…an Xbox or Playstation. Where you have to buy just THEIR item to be able to play THEIR game. To me that seems completely unfair and more offensive to the span of devices and players out there. My thoughts anyway.

      Like

      • Bunny, please, don’t get me wrong on this. That’s not what I’m trying to say, at all.
What I’m saying is that Tiny Co should bring a product to market, and ensure that it performs well in any media you are using. From the start, preferably.

What I do not think it’s fair, is that they perform a visual downgrade in the game after they have placed it on the market (since quite a while). Regardless of the characteristics of each device…
And I agree that everyone should have access to the game, the more the better. That is why I believe everyone should have access to the best conditions of the game, and not something that is over time adapted to it’s own limitations. If i crashes a lot, that’s a game problem, and not from the entire tablet or phone market. You have to know, to test, to understand where you are going to be… Just a thought thou.

And thank you for listening to us, it is very good that the “Addicts” also have a voice. Thanks 🙂

        • I understand. Just showing you another view on the Bigger Picture. 🙂

This is my take. New devices seem to come out monthly. There are THOUSANDS out there already. It is completely impossible for any company to test every single device and anticipate what will hit the market after they launch. Just can’t happen. To say make it work from the start…well…that will never happen. Not for any company out there. Too many probabilities of player/user error, coupled with various strengths WiFi, memory usage, data coverage, 3G, 4G, 4GLTE, on n on n on n on.

They can only do what they can to allow as many players as possible in their game. I have seen many others do this to many other games. Over and over and over. Events much like this one are HUGE and full of things that create havoc on all levels. Once the event is over and not so much going on, the devices may be able to function better and they can change and adapt the game again.

That is the GOOD thing. TinyCo DOES listen and watch its players… and change/adapt all the time. I have seen many sides to the gaming industry, so have a different understanding of how it works and what a company goes through to make it work. Some sacrifices have to be made. They don’t want to do it. No one wants to lesson their game they put so much time and effort into. But in the end it is all about the players and making it work.

Hang in there. This may just be a blip and then back to normal. No need to get upset or panic just yet. Give it time. See what happens. 🙂

  21. I have an LG VS980. The game worked very well prior to the “Bonnie” upgrade yesterday. Since then I have experienced a substantial decline in performance. The characters all move in a very jerky fashion. Scrolling through the town is the same. It can take 10 seconds for all the buildings to load.

  22. And for the record as the owner of an iPad Air I have not experienced any crashing or memory issues with the game that were not the direct result of a bug/glitch. This exact same thing also was implemented in Tiny Village over a year ago. Hmmm.

  23. The LG-D800 is the AT&T variant of the LG G2. It appears the changes were also sent to the Sprint variant LS-980. The G2 was last year’s
flagship. I find it hard to believe that a quad-core processor, 1080p display and 2Gb RAM phone needed to have its zoom limited. Some of those other phones listed are either last year’s or this year’s flagship devices. I’m a little disappointed that those are affected. It certainly detracts from the game play.

    Like

    • I’m with you, my LG G2 was affected and this phone isn’t even a year old. Not being able to zoom out is incredibly obnoxious and they decided to test this change at tail end of an event? really? Hopefully they revert this sooner than later.

    • I’m in the same boat here. Whats even more annoying is that I had really no complaints about game performance prior to the change. It feels like they just took a shotgun approach with this fix. Hopefully they will be able to refine the fix in the future…but i’m not terribly optimistic. The zoom out feature was one of the things that truly set TQFS apart in my mind. (My other point of reference is just TSTO)

  24. I have an iPad 2. While I don’t mind the loss of color depth, I do miss the zoom. It just takes way too long to scroll through the whole town and collect all the rent and find all the characters to send to new tasks. The only times my game has ever crashed was sometimes while switching between friends towns or once in a blue moon during the main game, but that’s why it saves all the time right?

If they insist on keeping it zoomed in so close, give us a button to collect all rent and completed tasks in one click and another that let’s you jump to the next character when setting tasks.

    • It is not just older as I stated. That falls under the “other” category. This was all a result of tech help tickets by the tens of thousands that they got on issue pertaining to specific devices. They will monitor them over the next few weeks to see if the fix helped or if other changes need to be made. It all boils down to how any device will be compatible with any app game. They do what they can to make it work with as many as they can. 🙂

It makes complete sense that reducing the number of objects that need to be drawn will help older and under powered devices. It’s the “other” devices that has me concerned. These should be more than powerful enough to run this game. My fear is that this change will simply cover up the true underlying issues on these devices. We will see though. If the game play is poor, then people won’t play and revenues drop.

    Like

    • As I stated in my post, it is not just older. The iPads fall in the “other” section. It all comes down to compatibility issues. There were tons of help tickets for the device having compatibility issues, so they changed and adapted the game to help. They have no way of controlling a device they do not make or sale to the public. All they can do is their best to try and see if it can stay compatible. If not, then a change has to be made.

If I want to end now the quest ‘stan the man pt. 1’ I receive a consuela error like this ‘failed to add inventory comicconbomb <=0' and the game crash. I reinstalled the game, but this didn't help me. this isn't only annoying because I can't use stan lee atm, but also because the performance is really bad now. It was good playable while comiccon worked for me, but now it is very stuttering and often freeze for a short moment. I'm playing on a overclocked htc desire s with jellybean. The facebook page ignores my posts and yeah, it's pretty much the same with support tickets. I hope it's getting better, when comiccon is really over. I don't expect a solution here, but maybe some user with the same problem, found only 1 so far on the fb page.

I find it extremely difficult to plan my Quahog with the current zoom level on the iPad, and the lower-res textures look kinda bad, so I’ll probably stick to playing in on my phone as a result of this change. Maybe they can change it back when they don’t need all that memory to keep 40 minion Stewies running around.

Also, since we last spoke, I just wanted to update you that on my game, with the zooming adjustment, I still see gears loading like other players, including on the new iPad, which to me wasn’t a big deal. And I will say that I think the reason for the lag of certain players might be due to all of the Mutant Stewies on screen at one time.

I will say that I feel we should have the option to lock the zooming as it is now, or that we can choose to go back to the way it was. One reason why I love Family Guy is because I can see my entire town, unlike with The Simpsons.

The decreased level of graphics with certain parts is also disappointing.

    • They are just doing what they can to help players out that had help tickets coming in like crazy. They will still monitor it after the event and for the next few weeks to see if any other changes can be made.

  42. Oh poo. I was hoping that the zoom thang was just a glitch on iPad and would be rectified eventually. The new zoom aspect makes my head hurt. At first I thought I’d accidentally double dosed on my medication and was flying with the fairies. But then I held my hand in front of my face and counted only four fingers and a thumb, so knew it had to be the game that was throwing a wobbly. But thanks for the info Bunny, I knew I could rely on this site for an answer. It’s the first place I look whenever I encounter an issue with the game. You’re all awesomeness personified. Kudos to you. BTW, I think I’m slowly falling in love with Felicia Day. I have to confess, I didn’t even know who she was until this event. But I’ve now made it my life’s mission to keep her away from Quagmire at all costs.

    • Lol. Well always happy to help. Hang in there. This may just be temporary. They are watching over the next few weeks to see what happens AFTER con and make any further tweaks needed. 😉

      • Thanks Bunny, it seems you were spot on with the word temporary because my zoom aspect has gone back to normal when I launched the game this morning! Either that or my medication has worn off… 😉 I’m on an iPad Air btw, so not sure if it’s just the Air users who will have seen their zoom return to normal or whether it’s all iOS devices. Just thought I’d report the change anyway. I’m rather pathetically relieved. Joking aside, collecting the rent was giving me motion sickness having to scroll around town zoomed in so close.

No biggie, but about 3 or 4 days ago I lost my music. Has anyone else reported their music not working? Apologies if this has already been covered, I may have missed it elsewhere. I’m not that bothered by the lack of music, I’ve tried all the usual tricks like disabling it in setting, shutting the game down and then relaunching and re-enabling the music, all to no avail. My last option is to delete then reinstall the game, but to be honest that seems like too much hassle just to get the music back! Thanks again for all the hard work you and your colleagues do on this site.

        • Happy to help. 😉

Most that had the sound issues had to force close and restart the game to correct it. Beyond that, it is just a matter of letting them know.

          • Hi Bunny, that’s bizarre, I tried all that already and still no muzak! I’m trying to summon up the motivation to contact TC about this, but unfortunately my uncle Can’t Be Bovvered has come to visit and I think he plans to stay all week. But I suppose if people like me don’t report small issues like this, then others suffer. So I’ll try harder to stuff my “uncle” back in his box where he belongs and report the missing music. Giggity.

  43. I first noticed the extreme zoom in, when visiting neighbors towns and figured it dealt with crash issues. While I have not experienced those technical difficulties with my own device, an iPad air, I understand their widespread implementation of this zoom ratio. I wish we could go back to the wider screen view, but respect their decision.
Still beats the pants off their competition in respect to being locked out, crashing and having to wait to RETRY!

  45. Chiming in here to say that the current version available via Amazon’s app store is still 1.1.4(5 pm eastern today)–I don’t know when 1.1.5 was released (sometime yesterday I guess as that’s when 1mobile claimed there was an update available)…I get that there are porting issues but this is the second time android got an update and amazon was left hanging, not a great way to launch an app tinyco (still think RolloJoe isn’t a prize if you have to grind to unlock him) /bitter kindle person

  46. Am I reading correctly that the close zoom is here to stay on iPad Air? If so, guess I’m done with this game. Being so close increases the time it takes to re-task characters and collect from buildings tenfold and I don’t have that kind of time to commit to this game. I feel quite gypped, as I have 800+ clams that will now never get spent.

    • Here to stay? Not sure. Here for now, yes. Still being monitored though for next few weeks to see what other tweaks need to be made or items removed from list. The rest of us players have not had the ultra zoom out feature and playing just fine, FYI. 🙂

  47. I’m on iPad2 and have never had any crashes – been playing since day 1. Makes me sad that I am now deemed un-zoomworthy. Also now I have to live with these awful color-banding gradients.
*sigh* … Could be worse I suppose.

Thanks Bunny and Alissa for looking into this stuff for the rest of us addicts.

  50. Of course this change comes six days after I went out and bought the galaxy s5 lol. would have been nice on my Galaxy express. Oh well, I’m not complaining too much, I have almost zero issues on my galaxy s5.
