Star Trek 101

Hey there Tribblemakers!

Looking round this Event with that Minion “WHAAAA???” look? Not sure who on earth these people are let alone all the inside jokes? Trying to figure out why the blind guy is wearing a banana clip for glasses? Well I am here to give those of you not into or that do not know anything of Star Trek a crash course on some basic information. Better grab some glasses, it’s about to get all geeky n nerdy up in here. 😉Star Trek Crew

You know how there are those books… ” _____ for Dummies”? Well I don’t think any of you are Dummies. So I prefer just a Basic 101 Lesson is needed instead. Cuz y’all are AWESOME! 😉

For all you Trek fans panicking at how I am explaining these, simmer down now. Lol. I am doing it in a very basic way, very simplistic, and with info hopefully people may relate to more. ANYONE can find more information on any of the following by online searching. So… FLAME DOWN! 😛

WHAT IS STAR TREK?

LogoLOGO (1)

Let’s start off with the main theme, Star Trek. This franchise was introduced to televisions worldwide in 1966. Yah… it is THAT old. Keeping with the “in the future” theme of the times, the TV Series followed a crew of a spaceship and they journeyed around to new planets and galaxies. Lots of cheesey one liners, some really basic basement special effects, horrible writing at times, but OMG it was so bad it was good. Lol. For what budgets they had then and what they could do, it actually was a really great series. And Star Trek fans (Trekkies or Trekkers some like to be called) were born.

The TV Series since then has had many revisions (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise), movies, and new crews. The one our silly lil game Event mainly focuses on is Star Trek: The Next Generation. This grouping of Characters ran from 1987-1994. It also dropped some movies.

WHO IS _____?

Captain KirkCaptain Kirk (Human): Played by actor William Shatner. He is the Captain of the Original Series of Star Trek. He liked woman, or anything that resembled a female type. His… speaking skills… were… silly… tosaytheleast. 😉

SpockSpock (Vulcan): Played by actor Leanord Nimoy. He is the 2nd in command on the ship and the Captain’s best friend. He is of Vulcan decent, but had a human mother so he constantly battles with the emotions he tries to hide. The actor came up with the split finger hand gesture himself. His main phrase spoken was “Live Long and Prosper”.

These next ones are mainly from Star Trek: The Next GenerationEnterprise Crew Next Generation

Captain PicardCaptain Picard (Human): Played by actor Patrick Stewart. He is the Captain of the ship. The main guy in charge. He had the hots for Dr. Beverly Crusher (Wesley’s Mom). He usually was known for saying “Make it so”.

Locutus (2) Locutus (5)Locutus (Human Borg Hybrid): This is Picard after being taken over and assimilated by the Borg (more on them later).

Riker (4) Riker (6)Riker (Human): Played by actor Jonathan Frakes. 2nd in Command on the ship and often referred to as #1. He started out his role on the ship nice and smooth skinned, but for some reason decided the beard must grow, and housewives went nuts. He also dated Deanna Troi and yelled at Wesley a lot. It is also an ongoing joke he just can’t seem to just sit down… like a normal person. He seemed to always have an… odd way of doing it?

Worf (3) Worf (7)Worf (Klingon): Played by actor Michael Dorn. He was kind of the head of Security on the ship and a grumpy and mean kind of Character. Klingons like to fight and it is very common the females look the same as the males. Oh that forehead.

Geordi (4)Geordi LaForge (Human): Played by actor Lavar Burton. He basically “drove” the ship and also helped in Engineering. He was blind to begin with and… a funny lil fact… they were limited on funds so they used an actual Banana Clip for his glasses. It stuck. Girls never looked at their hair clips the same. He also was the host for Reading Rainbow.

Deanna (2)Deanna Troi (Betazoid/Human Hybrid): Played by actress Marina Sirtis. She was the ships Counselor and an Empath. So I guess being able to read peoples thoughts and feelings helps one to know how that person is feeling. Lol. She had the hots for Riker to say the least. Lol. Though there was a time her n Worf made out a bit.

Beverly Crusher (3) Beverly Crusher (2)Beverly Crusher (Human): Played by actress Gates McFadden. She was the doctor of the ship but seemed to spend a lot of time with Captain Picard. She also had her young son aboard the ship, Wesley. Other than being a Doctor, she really spent a lot of time with Picard. Did I say she spent a lot of time with Picard? Cuz she did. 😉

Data (3)Data (Soong-type Android): Played by actor Brent Spiner. Like it says, he is a “robot” aka Android. He was 2nd Officer and also Operations Officer for the ship. He tried to become more “human like” as the series progressed. He seems to get himself in some pretty sticky situations.

Wesley (2) Wesley (3)Wesley Crusher (Human): Played by actor Wil Wheaton (make sure say it like Stewie does. Add the HA sound. Lol.) He was quite young when the TV series started and you got to watch him grow up on the Enterprise. He was ALWAYS getting in trouble. Probably why everyone kept yelling at him. He was an aspiring Starfleet Cadet and wanted badly to be a part of the crew. He does eventually get to become one.

Guinan (1) GuinanGuinan (El-Aurian): Played by actress Whoopi Goldberg. She was a bartender aboard the ship and kind of mysterious. She randomly showed up at the oddest of times, but seemed quite knowledgeable of situations you would think she wouldn’t understand. She acted like a Counselor, as bartenders do, and seemed to have a lot more hidden about her than anyone could know or understand. She had FABULOUS hats.

Q (1) Q JudgeQ (The Q Continuum): Played by actor John de Lancie. He is from a race of omnipotent beings that think they are Gods and like to play God with the Crew of the Enterprise. You just never quite know if this guy is going to kill you or just teach you a valuable lesson. Is he a villain or a hero? Who knows. His roles seem to vary so much each time he shows up. The ONLY reoccurring theme is… he has an obsession/fondness for the Crew.

WHAT IS A _____ ?

VulcanVulcan: A Highly Intellectual being. They tend to not show any emotions and are more a peaceful people. (Spock is a Vulcan.) They get along a bit better with the Humans than other races. They are known for their shaped up eyebrows and pointy ears.

Borg (10)Borg: For those of you that are Dr Who fans, think of these guys like the Cybermen. Once bodies of another race, they have been taken over by technology and transformed into some kind of hybrid thought group. Their sole purpose in life is to assimilate ALL races and make one perfect Borg race. They fly around in a Giant Cube. Resistance is futile.

Ferengi (5)Ferengi: The are like the “moneymen”. They have even been likened to the writers attempt to have a “Jewish” personality aboard. Their life’s goal is to acquire as much money as possible. They even have lots of rules of acquisition. Just watch out for their ears, they are REALLY sensitive to touch. Lol. They also tend the bars on the ships as well as the shops.

KlingonKlingon: These are kind of Human and Extreme Fighting Warrior hybrids. They are usually pretty aggressive and mean. Over the series of the show, they have changed in appearance from just a basic human with some awesome eyebrows to now what Worf looks like. The “butt crack head” look as some say. Lol. They come from Qu’noS (pronounced Kronos).

RomulanRomulan: These are a different version of a Vulcan. Highly intelligent beings, but more on the cruel side. Not so easy for anyone to get along with. They like to fight more than have peace.

TribblesTribbles: As in my original post, these lil furry creatures are much like Gremlins. You don’t want to feed them as they multiply and don’t stop til they take over the place.

EngineeringEngineering Bay: This is the main control center, if you will, of the ship. If something happens here, it is very likely the ship won’t work. The Core is located in Engineering.

Ten Forward (2) Ten ForwardTen Forward: I guess you could almost think of this location on the ship as a “Club”. It is where everyone goes to hang out, socialize, grab a bite to eat, and something to drink. It has a LOT of windows as it is by the front of the ship and offers a great outside view.

BridgeBridge: The is the “Driver’s Seat” of the ship. It is where the Captain and the Main Crew usually sit and navigate the ship. A lot of scenes take place on the Bridge.

Holodeck Holodeck (2)Holodeck: This is a giant room for Holograms. When someone is stuck out in space for long periods of time you may miss things like trees, water, other people of your “species”, maybe even loved ones present and passed on. So you go to the Holodeck to relive moments via Holograms. Though these are quite lifelike. You can also use this room to practice fighting as well as other things.

Borg (8)Borg Cube: A giant Metal Cube Spaceship that the Borg Travel round in. It is where the “hive” of Borg reside. You don’t want to see this thing show up outside your planet.

Klingon Bird of PreyKlingon Bird of Prey: A Spaceship used by the Klingon Species. This was the main ship of theirs you saw mostly. Usually as something bad was about to go down. Lol.

Romulan WarbirdRomulan Warbird: As it says… this is a Spaceship you really do not want to see in front of yours as it usually means a battle is about to break out.

Enterprise (1) Enterprise (2)Enterprise: The Main Spaceship flown in the series. It has had many versions as indicated in its writing aboard the saucer. (NCC -1701… followed by a Letter). The one in this Star Trek Event is from The Next Generation (most resembling NCC-1701-D).

ShuttleShuttle: These lil ships were great for shuttling people to and from the Enterprise. Made it a lil easier to bring just a few people to a planet were the Tranporter may not be available to beam them.

LatinumLatinum: This is a form of currency used by the Ferengi. Kind of like bars of gold. So it is highly sought after and a good thing to have a lot of it.

DilithiumDilithium: This is also referred to as Radan. This is a Crystal that helps regulate the matter/antimatter in the Ships Warp Core. This is a rare item and only found in very few places. So of course it is something highly sought after and needed by the Enterprise and other Ships out there.

Dark MatterDark Matter: This is what is thought to make up the Universe. It can be a bit tricky as when manipulated, it can make objects flash in and out of existence.

TransporterTransporter: This is used to transport people from one location to another. Whether another ship or another planet within range. Basically you are turned into a million tiny pieces and then put back together on the other side. Willy Wonka anyone? Lol.

ReplicatorReplicator: This takes pretty much anything you want and recreates a version of it for you. You mainly see these in the Cafeteria type areas recreating all sorts of items for the Crew aboard to eat and drink.

Now there is SO MUCH MORE I could go on n on n on about, but I think this may at least give you a basic idea of the Franchise. As always…there is a LOT online you can access with just a tap on the keyboards. There is also many more members of the Enterprise Crew I will be curious to see if they drop into the game. Sulu, Chekov, O’Brien, Lt. Yar, The Borg Queen, Uhura, and McCoy to name a few.

What do you think? Are they covering the items pretty close to the Franchise? Did this help you to understand some of what is going on more? Let us know.

  1. I’m want to know when they will admit that the “Tribbles” are really just Shatner’s discarded wigs.

  2. Thanks, Bunny. As someone with very limited knowledge, I appreciate the catch up. You rock!

As an aside, I personally say Wil Wheaton on the same way Sheldon does on Big Bang Theory. 😀

  4. Thanx once again!! Thank you Bunny!!, this help me alot, maybe is basic info, but helps to understand a little bit more my father-in-law.. He is a huge fan of SciFi specially StarTrek, so I’m always clueless watching a few eps of the serie 😉

  6. you talked about Weasley & Q… do you know something’s coming that I don’t (*hope* *hope*).

If Q does end up in the game, here’s betting there’s some MLP reference in the quest items or dialogue since he also played Discord in the recent incarnation.

  7. Was never really a hard core Star Trek fan but this event is a lot better than the holiday events where they just kept repeating the same stuff. But you mentioned doctor who and I can’t help but hope they do a doctor who event someday, or at least feature it on the show.

  10. Thank you for the summary. Only JUST unlocked Deanna – If Lois and Locutus take the same time then I’ve no chance of getting Beverly or Meg let alone Data/Stewie. I wonder if Tiny Co could just have tasks which earn items as timed – like all 4 hour tasks have a chance to earn Locutus’ tape, and all 8 hour tasks may earn scrap etc – It could be a way to use some of the other characters and it means everyone will have a chance… Just a thought 🙂 Also I HATE the phaser section – haven’t hit anymore than 1 item at a time and haven’t won squat. I’m a bit of a completist and it makes me unhappy when I can’t complete the set

    • Honestly, I’d be more worried about trying to get Captain Kirk. He’s still locked right now and we have no idea of knowing what materials he needs (I hope it’s not a lot of synthesizer ores)

      Like

      • I guess maybe Captain Kirk would be the Jesus of this star trek event. It would be very difficult and time consuming to earn him but maybe he would occasionally drop 1-2 clams from his tasks.
        lol!

  11. Nicely done Bunny! Written like a true fan and written so everyone can have a lot more fun with the game.

If anyone is interested in reruns of the Next Generation, they show several each week on the BBC. Watching them also makes the game a bit more fun, but not nearly as fun as the bestest Bunny ever! 🐰

    Hope you’re feeling better today!

  12. Seriously, what’s the deal with Trekkies/ers being SO nitpicky?!? I’m a devoted fan of all things Trek (with a DS9-era uniform in my closet to prove it), but my panties don’t get into a twist over some minor errors. I just really don’t get it ….

I started playing this game so I could take part in this event, and I’m generally pleased with the work tinyco has done in representing the ST universe. Making progress is a frustrating grind, but there are also moments of laugh out loud fun.

Adding Q to the game would be awesome! And if one of Dr. Crusher’s dialogue bits is a riff on her “there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you” line, I will squee like a fangirl.

  13. A while ago I read that the reason Riker always found weird ways to sit in chairs is because the actor Jonathan Frakes had a back injury that made it difficult and time consuming during shoots to sit normally and it was really attention drawing during scenes. In order to circumvent this he ended up just swinging his leg over the chair cause it was quicker and more comfortable. I believe there is even a YouTube clip compilation of a bunch of his weird sitting moves. It’s oddly fascinating to watch.

  14. Wait…were Picard and Riker not on at the same time as Spock and Kirk? Sorry if this is an obvious answer, but being as they had the same roles I’m assuming they weren’t, just not sure.

And btw, thanks for showing me Q. I’d really want an almost god-like character in my game (other than Jesus), but if he is added he’ll probably be premium or something cause they already have Kirk in the replicator and he can’t be in the other two sections of the ship since they’re taken. But then again, Klingon Meg isn’t either so maybe he or Wesley will be with her add-on. You never know.

But since this event started n i loved it so much I thought is give the films a go, so I watched star trek generations, then 1st contact then insurrection then nemesis….

I even watched the new Jj Abrams ones n i loved them!! Data’s my favourite character I love seeing him try 2 deal with emotions like fear and joy etc and when he finally gets a joke n can’t stop laughing, there’s something really endearing about him

I even watch the next gen tv series now whenever I get the chance, star trek has got a new fan thanks to this event and community!!!!

I can tell you have put a lot of work into this, on EASTER no doubt…, and the way you did it , you can’t help but want to read it. I asked for this like 2 or 3 weeks ago, and here it is. Sometimes I think I enjoy this site as much as the game…

now I’ve gone on to that subject, am I allowed to say that Sheldon’s mom will always be Aunt Jackie, and Lesley Winkleman will always be Darlene, and Leonard was David etc. etc.

Younger viewers will be scratching their heads, and at the risk of giving my age away even more……..the original Star Trek made it to English TV in the early seventies, and was scary to little kids ! 😨

    • I actually had a “sheldon cooper” like moment at (i think it was) wondercon one year. I stood in line to get LaVar Burton’s autograph & was starting to say how the behind the scenes Star Trek episode of Reading Rainbow inspired me to work in television as a kid, which I do now, & started to thank him when Brent Spiner sitting next to him leaned over & started talking about how great this silver sharpie was & how LaVar just *had* to get one & on & on & on. LaVar gave him a look but played along, signed my photo & said next. So much for thanking the guy for the inspiring moment of my career/life! I walked away literally thinking “Brent Spiner just sheldon coopered me!” I shoulda said it out loud but I didn’t.

No offense whatsoever, but I’m the type of person that always found this and other shows similar just weren’t ever interesting to me. But!, I did actually read this whole post…&& now I can say I have just the “basic” Star Trek knowledge of course! 😄

hey Bunny! Here’s an idea I automatically thought of after reading this post:, maybe (if ya wanted too!!), you or Alissa or whoever maybe even a “GUEST” WRITER???, can write up some more following posts like this and continue with some more deeper Star Trek details?! Maybe like a “Star Trek 101” posts once a week until event is over? Could be like this one is Part1 and then like Part2, Part3 etc.,.,.you get what I mean! 😊
hmmm…well it would have made more sense to even start doing it at like the beginning of the event so players who don’t know anything about it could kinda get an idea of what to expect and so on..

    • Well, if you look at my posts, there are many times I did add more info into them on the basic idea of what was happening. Honestly, to do it justice you would have to turn the site into all Star Trek all the time. We did think about it and found just a basic overall would be best so other posts could be focused on the actual event as this game is about it, but it is focused on the TV Series of Family Guy. So we are trying to stay close to it.

On the flip side, Guest Posts are ALWAYS welcome. If they follow our Guidelines and would help readers, we are happy to put them up. 😉

  28. Great write up! For anyone not really familiar with TNG, I’d recommend watching it a bit. Not sure if its on Netflix or whatnot, but you can probably find it there or YouTube. Check out season 2 episode 16 titled “Q Who” (my personal favorite) it will give you a quick look at Q as well as the introduction of the Borg. If you have the time while sitting around waiting for Worf to polish his sash, I say start at the beginning and work from there, but if you’re pressed for time at least check put the episode I mentioned. After playing TQFS the last two weeks, you’ll enjoy it, even if you didn’t think you were a fan.

  31. Pardon my nitpicking, but the Enterprise could not go to other galaxies. They nearly destroyed the ship trying to leave *this* galaxy.

And although TinyCo had been doing a great job, everyone knows the button to activate the Transporter shouldn’t read “Engage”, but “Energize!”

And one more thing: if you really don’t think we’re “dummies”, why do you say “lol” so much? We do recognize when you’ve told a joke!

        • I know what you are saying, and only said what I did to help a basic understanding. That is why I offered people to watch them to understand the full grasp of it. This game is for Family Guy, not Star Trek. This event is just a blip, so the post offered just a blip. I also know in speaking to MANY people over the years, that is the common thought… they explore galaxies. So, a simplistic idea and understanding for those out there and the way they may view it. 😉 (I think outside the box a lot)

If I was to do the franchise justice, this post would be a week long 3 to 5 times daily post at least just to cover basics. I think I did a good job in limited space. 😉

Just a lil extra side note for the LOL, I also add it to my posts as …well… look at our Guidelines. Words do not always show emotions. Some of the things I say COULD and HAVE been taken incorrectly. So to get the point across that I am NOT being serious and instead making a jest or humorous remark, I utilize my winky faces and LOL to show “no harm in this comment” towards the reader. Make sense?

    My bet:
    Next premium characters will be:
    – Wesley Crusher (likely)
    – Chief Miles O’Brien (likely)
    – Lieutenant Tasha Yar (unlikely)

It would be funny to have B-4, Lore or Dr. Soong along with Data 😀

Wesley would suit very well with the sick bay (and his mother). 😉

It would be nice to have Q as well, maybe as a “free” character when you have crafted all inside the replicator….. and as a “god”-like alien, maybe he has a nice 24 hour task to drop clams, like Jesus from christmas event. (*hint, hint*)

As a male player, I would like a cross-over with Voyager and have “7 of 9” as a character, that would be awsome *blush* I mean, Borgs are everywhere 😉

Oh, and I was surprised to see Guinan, she “only” showed up in 29 (of 176) episodes.

    P.S.:
The phrase “Make it so” is the reason for Patrick Stewart’s task “Make it sew” 😉

Writing about Star Trek right now is somewhat funny, here in germany, it’s a long Star Trek night, they already showed “Start Trek” (from 2009) and “ST: Into Darkness”. Right now, “ST: Nemesis” is running, next will be “ST: Insurrection” 😀

  39. Excellent post Bunny! It was so very thoughtful of you to take the time out, to break it down for us players. Honestly, I haven’t watched Star Trek in ages and was more a fan of the original series. Loved Captain Kirk and many of the OG’s lol. Just wanted to say when you talked about the Klingon’s foreheads…bought back memories of watching them in the series…shivers. Those heads used to gross me out. Lol. Anyways, have been keeping an eye on Netflix streaming, and plan on eventually doing a marathon session with ST-TNG. Oh and just have to add, when JJ Abrams did the 2009 Star Trek movie – LOVED that, watched it a few times. 🙂

  40. I’m curious, what percentage of players aren’t familiar with Star Trek?
It would be like not knowing who the Beatles were. Or the grateful dead for that matter.
Anyway, it was always my understanding that Picard and Beverly crusher were very close and platonic, not that he had the hots for her but a deep respect and caring for her and her son. I thought he knew her ex husband (Wesleys father) as well.
Or maybe I missed an episode where they did it or something.
And what about worf and troi getting together ? that was just so wrong!
And btw, Geordi was the Chief engineer, not just a helper!
Ok sorry, you really got my nerdy Star Trek blood pumping there for a minute! Nice job splainin’ it all in a nutshell.
    Happy Easter

    • Lol… you didn’t pay very close attention to my info at the top of the post did you? 😉

I was VERY basic. To go into detail would require an individual post on each Character, their lives, loves, many “costume” changes and why. They all started out at one level and ended at another. So… basics is good enough. 😛

  41. I think that TC has done their homework for this event. Most things seem to be a faithful representation of the original subject matter – the bridge, main engineering, the characters/skins (casting Mort as the Ferengi – too appropriate…), and all the extra goodies are all easily recognizable to any Trek fan.
I thought that we would mostly be seeing mostly well-known stuff, so I
am a bit surprised to see some of the obscure references that have made an appearance (Armus, Skimpy Sarong Herbert). This being the case, I hope that TC has a few more aces up their sleeve in the weeks to come.
Totally stoked about the Borg, and I hope they offer Borg NPC’s – I would love to have a dozen or so swarming about my tiny Quahog when the event is over. I also hope that they step up the available decos soon – two measly plant options just seems a bit minimal compared to previous events…

With all the positives that I could rant on about, I must mention at least one negative. Being one of those nit-picky Trek fans, the casual labelling of the so-called “Romulan Warbird” deco really grinds my gears – when it quite clearly is a Romulan Bird-of-Prey. Don’t get me wrong, the ship looks spot on, but it simply is not a Warbird. (The rest of you might roll your eyes at such a technical gripe, but if TC wants to do the Trek – they should do it right. Because if you mess with the bull, you get the Gorn…)

Seriously though, great job on everything so far.

    • Lol. There may have been copyright issues or a way of kind of covering many ships instead of just one. I know what it is supposed to be though. 😉

  42. Nice synopsis

The original series writing was cheesy by our standards but we have to compare it to what else was out on television, which was typically bigoted, sexist and simple.

The original series tackled racism and politics as no tv show had ever done; it even had the first interracial kiss. DS9 had the first same-sex kiss.

We also have to remember that the original series was cancelled after only three seasons but was kept alive by the fans and syndication. The fans were so active that the first space shuttle was named “Enterprise”. While it never flew in space, NASA flew it off the back of a 747. It now sits in the smithsonian air and space museum at Dulles.

Ever wonder why there are so many flip phones? Look at Kirk’s communicator.

Unfortunately, the future will probably not be like Star Trek but if humans are able to explore the Galaxy in FTL starships in their pajamas all while being liberated pf our cultural and sexual hang ups, I would be happy with that.

    Enjoy!

    • Great post, but the Enterprise space shuttle is no longer at Udvar-Hazy in Dulles. The shuttle Discovery is at Dulles, and the Enterprise is in New York on the Intrepid carrier museum. (Just wanted to clarify in case people wanted to go see either.)

The original USS Enterprise model from TOS in the 60s does live at the National Air and Space Museum in DC and is currently undergoing restoration in preparation for the 50th anniversary of Trek next year. I only wish that NASM had other Trek models – I’d love to see the Galaxy class Enterprise-D up close and personal.

        • Yep, and him and Felisha Day do alot of work together on their youtube and twitch channel “Geek & Sundry” (he does a great tabletop game series with people you’d know, she does a bunch but I love the lets play stuff she does with her RL brother Ryan)

She is already in from the ComiCon stuff, so I think if they reached out, he’ll be in.
